So I installed a K&N filter about 5,000 miles ago I my check engine light came on 3 days ago while I was driving. I took the car for service @ 40,000 miles and the dealership guy said that because the K&N uses oil that my air sensor would get 'dirty' I maybe my check engine light would come on it would be expensive to either clean it or replace my sensor. Any of you guys had this problem ???? How can I get ride off this now without taking the car in the dealership ????

I pressed the little wrench button on my dash and it says next service in 5,000 miles.

 

Find someone with VAG-COM and have them scan the car or take your car to Autozone or Advance Auto Parts and have them scan your car for codes. Report back with the what codes you get.

 

How much would this cost ????

Autozone and Advance Auto Parts will scan your car for free. It's the only way to see why the CEL is on without taking it to the dealer.

 

It is possible your MAF got dirty, but it could be a number of causes. Get it scanned. If it IS the MAF then clean it with electronics cleaner.

So here's the result: DTC codes---- P0171 System Too lean ( bank 1 ) The guy at advance auto parts recomended I run a Injector cleaner and run ti for a while and that after like 3 or 4 starts it should reset itself if not take it back in to plug it in again.
I always buy SHELL ( 91 octane ) gas but last time I got it from conoco maybe my car is used to shell gas and putting the other one had sometthing to do with this. Does anybody know what the dealership do at 50,000 mile service ??? maybe is acting up before the service.

They change the engine oil and filter. They reset the service reminder. They inspect cooling, exhaust, battery, tires and brakes.
