Default Chipping an A/T

I have a 1997 1.8TQ and was wondering if it was worth it to chip it sine I have an A/T. I wish I could go back and buy a manual transmission because I'm starting to get bored with the automatic. Would it be worth it to throw in 500 for a chip? Or would the lag between shifts and response time negate the performance gains? Basically just looking for an opinion.

yeah a chip with auto tranny can only be a good thing. You can get a Tip. chip too that makes shifts faster.. But if your 97, i dunno if tiptronic was available.
