Default Chips

Since the header idea didn't work, seeing as how the only place that has it charges over a grand, I'm thinking of getting a chip. To be honest, I'm looking for more horsepower altogether. So can anyone recommend a chip or other, not too expensive ways to add horsepower. Thanks. by the way, i have a 99' A4 2.8 Quattro.

GIACis the only (that i know of) company to offer a chip for the 2.8.. even then, it's $500 and only gives you 10hp.. not a very cost effective mod. but then again, there are none for the 2.8

sorry to keep bringing you down. if you wan't to mod, then get a 1.8t.. or upgrade to a B5 S4..

one thing you can do for cheap, is gut the main cats. not emissions friendly, but it can be really cheap/free. my buddy did it to his 2.8 and it sounded better. and he said he could feel a bit of better power

Check the sticky with 'useful links' or whatever. There's a chip thread... but yeah, roughly 50 hp and 50-80 pounds of torque.

How would I go about gutting the main cats?
note, first off, in doing this you may be gong against your states emission and smog laws. so look into that first before doing this.. as some states have laws where if your car is found to not have any cats they will tow and impound your car on the spot. along with fines that can be pretty steep..

with that said. there are two ways to go about doing this. both require removal of the cats. one is when the cats are removed you, through both openings of the cat, take a screw driver, chizel, any type of tool/object that you can break apart the honey comb material inside the cat. then clean it all out the best you can.. this is a link on how to gut the pre-cats on the 2.7t motor. not exactly the same, but should help you a bit to see some visuals and know what you're getting youself into..

http://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng.html

the second way, and the somewhat easier method, is to cut a "door" on one side of the cat. large enough that the opening of the "door" is about the entire surface area that side. then it is much easier to cut out all of the material inside. then just simply weld the door shut and reinstall.. this way is much easier in regards of the gutting process. but you need to have the tools and skillsaccessable to be able to cut into metal and weld back together..

good luck
