i have a 1996 Audi A4 1.8 and the climate control unit doesnt function any more, i had a look on the net and found one for a 1998 model which the unit look the same. rang audi centre and he said its a newer version and his wasnt sure if it would work on mine? however there arent any new function buttons...

I'm pretty sure it will work. Whats the part number on yours? I hooked one up from a 99 A4 and put it in my 97 A4 and every function worked. I'm actually selling it for $50 + shipping if your interested. Heres a pic of it and the part number:
