Clutch makes clunk on first engagement after cold start
I recently got a 2002 A4 3.0 Quattro,
When I either back up, or pull forward in 1st (or reverse) when the car is cold, the clutch makes this funny clunk when it's nearly all the way released.
When I start backing up, with the clutch pushed 3\4 to halfway, in... it's normal feeling, but when I get to like 1\4- 1\8th pushed in, it makes a noise. In addition to the noise I can feel a sort of clunk. Often times, I backup, and never fully release the clutch, then throw it in 1st, and when I get close to releasing it in 1st, I hear\feel it then.
Only does it once per cold start - not on warm starts or anything like that.
While this does not worry me, I want to know why it does this - i've not had a car do this before.
Is this normal? Does yours do this too?
I drove 1.8T and didn't notice it.
Thanks
Rob

Tranny Fluid is most likely cold and does not provide sufficient lubrication until it is warm. I would check your fluid to see if its low and inspect your clutch plates.
After driving it again, it sounded like a Crunch. I will listen more carefully in the morning and see if I can tell where it is coming from. It is very reporducable, it happenes every morning without fail.
Brake pads - sounds like that could be it. Oddly enough, I tried to feel more carefully, and I felt it in the gas pedal more than the clutch. Also, by engaging extra slow, I was able to make go crunch after it was fully in gear (1st), it made the crunch when I accelerated. Also, it's not just when cold -- I got it to do it after the car was sitting for about 5 min. Perhaps it's some sort of "test" that runs every time you start moving?
Thanks
