yea, i dont think i will take it to the dealership. i honestly wish i had the time and the know how to replace the clutch.
but i guess the ~$1000 is ok price for the clutch and the labour.

$350CAD for the clutch and around $600 for the labour....

I got my Sach's replacement OEM clutch off ebay, brand new $200. (came with PP and clutch disk, the pilot bearing was separate)

8-11 hours labor is about normal. Depends on how competent your mechanic is.

Do not spend that $2100 on a clutch replacement.

Everything on these cars is excessively complicated, tasks like rebuilding a motor or replacing a clutch are probably about the easiest things that you could do on them haha... well maybe changing the oil would be easier.

This clutch (from what i hear) is among the easiest to do, it really is just a handful of bolts... but you need a lift

tasks like rebuilding the engine are upon the easiest things to do?!?! i can think of about any about and other part on the car is easier to physically work on than overhauling the entire engine with that said if you have the time and patience go for it, either that or get a good mechanic to help you with it. it may be within your mechanical abilitys so i would overview it in a manual to see if it is something you can handle, other than that the clutch the guy wants to sell you im pretty sure is a sachs since u didnt know how to spell it, and that is a good decent price for a clutch job on that car i think.

Did they mention the possibility of having to replace the flywheel as well?

Did they mention anything about the slave cylinder?

for replacing the clutch (plates) you need to remove the (catalytic thing), the starter motor, slave cylinder, etc. and then drop the transmission on a transmission jack. it might be a good idea to replace as much as you can while your in there just so you don't have to go through more trouble later. you also need a special alignment tool for the clutch plates and flywheel stuff I believe.... Overall is less expensive to do it yourself than take it to the shop although depending on how much free time you have you may want to take it to the shop/dealer

yea i think i may have you beat.....i got quoted from HBL AUDI in TYSONS CORNER VA (remember that huuuuge ripoff)....$3,000 for a clutch.....in case you cant break it down...if the clutch costs $500 bones then thats 25 hours labor at $100 an hour...ps....that didnt include me paying uncle sam from getting all teh WMD's out of iraq (taxes for you non americans)
