What do you all think of this reader? Its cheap but all I need is something to retrieve fault codes.

you mean the blue one?? if so its no good for the Audi, I know because I have one ( never tried it on the 2001+ cars with CAN )

go to autozone, i bought mine there and i think it was 45.00, i don;t trust ebay things all that much.

That should work fine for your 98.

Any ODBII compatable reader will work on 96 and newer US vehicles.

As long as your in the US of A............
