Cold air is good.
It's funny, back in the late 70's and early 80's we actually thought that heating up the intake air would be a good thing because, we thought the hotter air would increase the likelihood of more complete combustion. We didn't think about the fact that hotter air meant less oxygen.
Actually David's reply mentioned the dampness in the air. That, in addition to the coldness, helps also. When the air is damp, the water in the air absorbs heat during the compression and power stroke, which helps reduce pre-ignition.
