Conecting an Aftermarket Amp to HU
Hey Folks,
New to the forums... cool place!
Just bought a 2001 1.8t and loving it, but I'm hating the sound system[:-]
I'm thinking about putting in an amp/ sub and upgrading the speakers. I'd like to keep the stock Head unit if I can. I've done a few searches on this forum and have seen that several people have done that. The only thing I'm unsure about is how to get the remote power (turns the amp on when the HU is turned on) to the amp. Obviously it's easy enough to get the power from the battery and such but I haven't seen anyone address the remote power issue. Any help would be apperciated!
Thanks,
dave.

Grab yourself a Line Level Converter, preferably a 4-channel one. That wires into the speaker wires behind your factory radio and then gives you 2 sets of RCA plugs. Run RCA wires to a 4 channel amplifier and then provided you have a 4 channel with an ouput, you run a short set of RCA's to a sub amp. That's probably the best all around way to do it. Remote turn on you can grab from the ignition wire of your radio harness and run that back. Yes, it's very possible to run this all off your factory stereo. I would strongly recommend replacing it for the BEST result though - you can get a radio with 3 pre-outs to hook your amps up to and you'll truly get a better signal into the amps and overall will have better sound.
Hey Guys,
Thanks for the info so far. The one thing I'm searching for still is which wire to use as the remote turn on. Initialdtm said to use the ignition wire. I've looked and I don't see any labeld as such. On the wire diagram sticker on the top of the HU, next to the Neg. and Pos. terminals there is a icon for a light followed by an "I". Could that be it? There is one that says.."REMO" under the option box. Any thoughts?
P.S. I've tried to upload the diagram on to the site but it's not letting me
Here's a link where you should be able to see the diagram...

Yeah... if you could part with it, an aftermarket HU would make a big difference... I never really knew, until I got my cda-7998 back yesterday. I had a cda-9855 as a loaner, while the 7998 was repaired... and I sorta thought my stereo sounded worse, but thought it must have been in my head (the 9855 is a high end deck) -- but nope, I put the 7998 back in, and it was an immediate improvement. WIERD. Glad as hell to have it back though... stay away from anything with alpines "glide touch"
