Just wondering , how important is a 1 min cool down after a hard drive ?

i would say very inportant. if u dont wanna have the hot oil sit on the hot turbo and cook give it a min to circulate and cool down, it will help the life of ur turbo and reduce sludge i think.

Just keep it under 3k rpm's the last few minutes of your drive. I never drive hard right up to my driveway and just shut it off. Also, I keep it under 3k for the first few minutes after start up.

^^ im the same, at least i wait a 1.5 minutes. What happens is all the the hot oil that is inside the turbo will cool down and "cake" on to the turbine and it will build up and your turbo will be shot in no time. It is called "caking".

i was reading this article that suggested there really is no need for a cool down.
Apparently if you're using a very high quality oil and have a water-cooled turbo no damage will occur

that may be true but thats not the case in the 1.8T or 2.7TT

Isn't the 1.8T a water-cooled turbo?
If not, then what's that pipe going from the upper radiator hose to the centre of the turbo?

i wouldnt know, i have a 2.8 but all i know are the horror stories i have heard from not doing the cool downs after hard drives.
