Coolant Level and Overheating Issues
I have an 02 Audi A4 1.8T in a non-Quattro model. It has 68K miles on it. I was driving it around, parked it, came back and noticed that while I drove off, that my engine temp was all the way on high. The coolant level warning light came on as well. I ended up towing it back to my mechanic who said it was the thermostat. That was replaced and the engine temp was still going to high. They are now saying its the waterpump, but that would of been an obvious problem to spot in the first place. Its remains a mystery to me and my mechanic is going through the car again. Has anyone had a similar problem or any clues on what to check next? Thanks alot!
I know of a lot of ppl changing the waterpump when they do a timing belt change along with idler pulleys and Thermostat. I am sure that the waterpump is your issue, its not much. Let me know if I can help!

a little caution here because it could have damaged the cylinder head because of over heating so make sure your mechanic knows what hes on about because it could envelope to a costly job in the end ( chaining parts to solve an unknownproblem = cost to you ) if hes a pro he should know what to look for
check the radiator fan try to stop it while the car is idling it looks like it is spinning fast but if you can hold it if it is the fan.look to see if the fan kicks in and spins faster.or might be the thermostat
