coolant temp gauge
i managed to somehow break my coolant temp gauge last night when i was working on stuff. somehow broke it so that instead of it zeroing out at full cold and warming up to the 12 O'clock position, it now zeros out at around that7 o'clock position and at full operating temperature, it is around the 9 o'clock position. so at full operating temp, it is still below thefull coldmark on the gauge. i was wondering if anybody knows if it is possible to purchase just the gauge itself somewhere instead of having to buy a whole new gauge cluster. i was looking and its just a small round rheostat type gauge thats soldered into the circuit board of the gauge cluster. i am fine at soldering and would much rather just buy the gauge itself and change it out than spend a couple hundred on a whole new gauge cluster. i assume that the dealerships will probably only sell the whole cluster assembly, but do you think VDO would sell just the individual gauge since they make them?

chaos... those look like aftermarket gauges that go in a different location... no? i think he is looking to fix his and/or replace the unit itself thats behind the gauge cluster... im not to familiar with these parts as ive never been in there.
oh i read it quickly and thought he asked if vdo or some other company makes just a temp gauge you can stick anywhere, guess he was asking if anyone made one that fit into that spot...which i doubt. i'd say just grab a cluster from a car being parted out
yeah i figured i would have to buy an entire new cluster from someone but i didnt want to do that because my lcd is in perfect condition and thats hard to find these days so i was hoping i could just find the individual gauge somewhere. i guess i will have to start looking for used gauge clusters then. thanks
how did you mess it up? i took my insturemnt panel out once to clean the dust off the glass (and remove the airbag light....). i nudged the coolant needle and it would read about 1/4 when it was cold. i just gently move it back to the cold spot and it reads perfect now. actually it always read a little off and after i reset it, it's perfectly in the middle when the car is at normal temp. try moving it back before assuming it broken. afterall, it is moving when the car heats up.
i did try to fix it. i took it back out and placed the needle right on the C and put it back together. as soon as i turned the key, the gauge zeroed itself out back down at like a 7 o'clock position. i guess i could try taking it out again and put the needle towards the H on the gauge and see if it zeroes itself down to 7 o'clock again or not. i'm not sure how i broke it though. i wasnt even messing with that gauge at all. i just took it all appart and when i put it back together, that gauge didnt work right.
