Default CRAZY Turn SIGNALS

I got a 1997 b5 2.8 quattro and my problem is all of a sudden my turn signals have been acting very strangely. Sometimes they would operate normally and then other days/times they would just blink for a few seconds and shut off without me even turning or moving the selector. a few people have told me its the relay but i dont know where they are located. has this ever happend to any one? and if it has what was the solution?? because this is def gettin annoying and i dont wanna blow big bucks at audi [:-] for something i might be able to do... and oh yeah i tried to post the lil video i got of the problem but i dont know where to host it at and its in quicktime format incase anyone has some ideas..

The relay is actually your hazard switch button. It also double-duties as your turn signal relay.

Yea sounds like its gonna be that relay. I had it fixed on my car this past saturday, dealer charged me $150.00 DIY if you can manage.

I agree that it is most likely the relay, but try the cheap/easy fix first.

get some spray contact cleaner and spray it in the turnsignal stalk and work it back and forth. Use paper towel to catch the overspray and stuff that runs out.

Let it dry and see if that solves the problem. If not, you will have to replace the relay.

brrman so let me get this str8 the hazard switch itself is the relay for the turn signals?? so if i have to replace the relay i have to replace the actual hazard button/switch itself?

david9999 The turnsignal stalk is the lever right? so you sayin for me to spray the cleaner in where it meets behind the steering wheel?

sorry to be asking all these simple minded questions guys but you know im still kinda a newbie and i rather save the $$ because 19' wheels aint cheap.. LOL

Get some contact cleaner or TV tuner spray from radioshack and spray it on the turnsignal lever and move it back and forth to see if there is gunk on the contacts. This is less likely to be the problem, but the cleaner is only about 8 bucks.

Just go buy the relay from the dealer (~$50). To pop the old one out you can remove the stereo and then push the relay out from behind. If you don't have seat warmers you can remove the pop down cubby hole and push the relay out from behind there.

yes - the hazard switch is the relay. The whole component. It comes out as a long rectangular box with the hazard button on it.
