Default dead steering

waht might be happenin if when i hit bumps in the road, my steering wheel feels dead. like, you feel the bump as the car goes over it, but it feels like it didnt even come through the wheel becasue there is too much free play or something. also, if i turn the wheel left and right at like 50 mph+, the car doesnt move until the wheel is turned a few inches to either side. control arms? tie rods? something else? help! oh, and my brakes are shot. should i get the dealer rotors or go for like slotted aftermarky?

sound like tie rod ends or maybe the hole rack. and as for the brakes, get some after market ones if you have a few extra $$
