Diagnose result - questions!!
Hi guys!
I'm sooo happy to own Audi, it is 99 A4 2.8 Quatt manual and a little over 120k miles. I bought it just a week ago and had mechanic diagnose this car. Now I have the result and looks like lots of things should be replaced.
Some findings before the diagnosis were
- oil leak on the right front area of the engine comprtment
- making a hard turn the last part of the turn is rough and hard.sometimes there's a noise from the wheel/brake..
So what they found were
- valve cover gaskets have stage 2 oil leak and front cover seal also leaking. recommend steam cleaning to help locate source of leak (engine room is so dirty..)
- upper control arms bushings are torn and cracking, axle boot cracking
And they recommended some replacements...
- due to stage 2 leak (total/labor/parts)
[ul][*]power steering reservoir replacement ($850/390/460)[*]valve cover gaskets replacement ($840/560/280) - removing defective cam position sensor, valve cover and cam tensioner gaskets and replace them with new components. Checking cam and crank seals for leak.[/ul]
- due to power steering problem,
[ul][*]Upper control arm replacement ($730/260/470)[*]axle boot (front outer) replacement ($270/225/45)[/ul]
Still they recommended steam cleaning so that they can determin where the oil leaks are originating(??!!)Anyway I've heard about the high repair cost of European car, but it seems to be more than I expected. I' d better try to find other independant shop (anyone knows in bay area CA??? please advise me!!!!)
Now questions...
-What is "stage 2" leak?
-Is there any item that I can do the replacement job by myself? I'm not that high skill person especially mechanical job.
- where is the cam tensioner gasket?
Any advise/comment would be appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

RE: Diagnose result - questions!!
LOL wtf is a stage 2 leak?
you should be glad you dont have a stage 5 leak, or else you would have to replace the flux capacitor inside your drilled and slotted turn signal oil lines, and that is an expensive fix[8D]

RE: Diagnose result - questions!!
A stage 2 leak is a category the dealer uses to classify how bad a leak is. A stage 1 leak is just (sweating)
but no repair is needed. Stage 2 is leaking out of the seal but isn't hitting the floor or belly pan yet. Stage 3 is a full blown oil leak.
They aren't authorized by audi to do a repair for a stage 2 leak, since they are charging you the prices seem about right.
