Diesel vibration
Bought my '02 A4 1.9TDI 130 a few months ago. Great car, but for excessive vibration on the auxiliary drive belt on tick over. Changed the tensioner and checked all the other pulleys for any movement - all seemed OK. Had an independent Audi garage look at it - they thought it was normal, though we had driven other TDI's which we were sure hadn't had this vibration. This week the car broke down. Ground to halt at a junction and engine wouldn't turn on starter. On inspection of engine bay, auxiliary belt on alternator had failed. Pulley on alternator has some sort of bearing clutch arrangement in it which failed completely, moved forward on it's shift, ripping theauxiliary drive belt to shreds, which then wrapped around the bottom timing belt pulley. Timing belt was badly damaged, but didn't snap. Shreds of auxiliary belt wedged inthe timing belt teethprevented the engine turning. I think I've been lucky as the timing belt was mangled and a rip part way across, but I'll know shortly when I've replaced the alternator and belts later today. Here's hoping!!!
