Default Do these prices seem high to you?

Hi guys. I received a price quote from my local mechanic for a few repairs.

$400 for a complete tune up (including wires).

$300 to replace break pads (per axle so it'd be $300 for front and $300 for rear).

$600 to replace timing belt ONLY (my car has 55K miles and I'm thinking of getting that done before it comes back to bite me in the ***). Water pump or any other component is extra. These estimates include labor.

This is the first time I'm doing this type of maintenance on the car (I bought it recently) and therefore I don't know how much these things usually cost. I searched the archives here and a lot of you seem to be buying the timing belt kit and installing them yourselves. That's not an option for me because I'm not mechanically inclined.

Do those price quotes seem high to you guys or are they in the ball park?

Thanks in advance.

ok, what all is included in a tune up from this guy....... cause you have individual coils, or should have.... and those are about 40 from dealer.. x4 = 160, all you gotta do is take off the cover and pop them out, unplug and reinstall and re plug...... don't pay for that, even novice can change those......
600 for brakes is extremely high..... pads should be at most 100 per set, and you could change the fronts your self, just look at the diy

600 for kit+ labor...... kit is about 250 if i remeber right and alot of people say labor alone is about 500, you have to pull the front end, if you have no clue what you are doing i wouldn't chance that

but back to tune up.....depending on what they do, you should be able to get them to combine tune up and tb into one labor charge...... it might be a little more than 600, but not a grand.....

what kind of shop is this, indy or dealer, are they specialized in german cars(audis) or do they mainly know domestics?

you might try and find a place that knows audi's

Yeah, I had a feeling that the price for the break pads seemed high.

The one price that concerned me was the timing belt replacement. But it seems that $600 is in the ball park then?

Thanks guys.

no, like stated, and if you search you will see......
http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/...ategory=Engine

here is their matanance page for an 01........ 1 coil is 59 which is like 15 more than dealer
here is the timing belt kit page.....as cheap as 170, but for full kit, about 270
and labor should be about 500 by it self

like i said get a second opinion and if this place doesn't specialize in audi's get your second opinion there

The brake pad quote seems a little high. I am getting mine done this week for around $140 for just the front. They are just OE replacement brake pads nothin wild. The mechanic has worked on euro's since he opened knows his stuff inside and out.

although im no B5 expert, those brakes are high! i DIY my own pads and rotors.. very easy... bout two hours.... if he is just doing the pads, he is making $250 front and rear

the timing belt quote seems fair... i doubt he knows what he doing because he told u he is replacing wires..

tune up? wtf is he doing? this whole wire replacing thing would scare me off because if its like my b6, u unplug the coilpack and put in the new one.. very very easy and about $120 or 150 in parts add in some plugs.. maybe $200 including oil change,$250 if u did every filter on the car which i doubt he is doing
