Do these prices seem high to you?
ORIGINAL: coolvirus
Hi guys. I received a price quote from my local mechanic for a few repairs.
$400 for a complete tune up (including wires).
$300 to replace break pads (per axle so it'd be $300 for front and $300 for rear).
$600 to replace timing belt ONLY (my car has 55K miles and I'm thinking of getting that done before it comes back to bite me in the ***). Water pump or any other component is extra. These estimates include labor.
This is the first time I'm doing this type of maintenance on the car (I bought it recently) and therefore I don't know how much these things usually cost. I searched the archives here and a lot of you seem to be buying the timing belt kit and installing them yourselves. That's not an option for me because I'm not mechanically inclined.
Do those price quotes seem high to you guys or are they in the ball park?
Thanks in advance.

if not don't let him touch your car, casue 500 for a tb job means he has never done one on an audi and doesn't know you have to pull the front end
second...... like i stated and others behind me...... i think all b5's have indavidual coils
find a reputable euro shop to do all your service, unless you wanna go to an audi dealer, or try reading the diy's and do this stuff yourself
but give us a list of his tune-up
and as stated before, brakes are overpriced....... here is a brake diy

that is front pads and rotors.,....... rears should be similar, you will need to buy a compression tool, for your pistons though
and diy page

i dont know why shops charge so much for brakes. my buddy just got his done on his monte carlo, at over 400 just for pads. i think im gona start telling all my friends to bring their cars over my place for basic maintenance. i would make a killing.
timing belt price is pretty good but the others are way high and DIY anyways. You could do the timing belt yourself but only if your comfortable with removing the radiator. If not, just have the shop do the timing belt, and replace the brakes, and do a tune up yourself. all you gotta do is change a few plugs and filters.
