Default down shifting with a turbo...bad?

I've heard that downshifting with a turbo is bad for it, but the explanation I got for why didnt make much sense, and it wasnt from a very good source.

Does anyone have a good opinion and reason?

I'd rather downshift than break, but id rather replace breaks than turbo...

ya, that makes no sense. what was the explanation you were told?
you sure they werent just trying to explain to you that downshifting to slow down puts strain on the transmision and its cheaper to replace brakes than a tranny? But that debate goes for any car, turbo or not. There is a good thread on it somewhere around here, search on "downshifting to slow down."

the only time downshifting is really bad for the tranny is if you are cruzing on the highway at 60mph in 5th and decide to put it into 3rd and drop the clutch without matching revs...other than that its fine.

Thats what i was thinking. My teacher is the one who told me and it made no sense. She said she had a saab wiht a turbo and she was told when you down shift it makes the fan in the turbo spin the opposite way, which doesn't make sense to me and that when it does that the blades of it shoot off and kill the turbo...I didnt think it was true, but thought i should get some more insite on it.

Thanks everyone...

well it is a saab, so you never know.. i mean the entire rotation of the engine could be somehow reversed to it intakes air through the exhaust and exhausts it through the intake...
