I have both lights in mine for the rear fogs so I don't get pulled over for it. LOL And I only turn them on when it's really foggy. BUT I do have my front fogs on all the time just because it looks cooler that way

ok i tried it on my 04 avant and yes the left break light lites up LOL

is this illegal in the US?

yes it is legal in the united states, only in bad weather conditions.
