Default EGR Valve

Hey guys...

did a search and didnt find anything relavant to my topic...

Anyway, my 'check engine' light came on yesterday, so i took it in to have it looked at and they told me it is a bad EGR Valve. Can anybody tell me what that is/what it does? They also told me it would be a little over $500 to fix, with parts and labor.

The EGR valve (exhaust gas recirculator) reroutes hot exhaust gas back through the combustion chamber. It reduces the emission of oxides of nitrogen, which ultimately becomes smog in the aptnosphere. Generally there's not much you can fix on them, either they work or they don't.

24 EGR temp sensor G98 on intake manifold under throtle body

25 EGR vacuum regulator solenoid vavle N18

the actual egr valve should be conected to the solenoid by vacuum line ask the dealler what parts are broken if you can do it yourself

Where is the EGR valve on 1996 A4 2.8 V6, and how easy is it to replace? What needs to be removed to access it?
Do you have any pictures/diagrams?

Thanks a bunch

Thanks for the welcome.
I looked at the schematic from SlimChriz.
Is the egr actually shown on that drawing?
He refers to vacuum regulator solenoid valve (#25?) connected to egr. How easy is it to access these?
Do you have to take off the throttle body?
Do you think I need to replace the O2 sensor(s) also?
The car failed emissions because egr and O2 sensor fault codes were on.

If you look under ur hood it should show a lay out of your EGR system hoses and everything
This is something you should do, it can affect you O2s in a slight way as the egr system cools down the
intake charge of A/f mixture,
If i was u i would het that done
Look at the vacum hoses to see if its all ok,
a few things u can do yourself with out vag com
