Default Engine Code

I bought a 97 A4 1.8T. The engine is not original to the car so how do I find out the engine code?

Its stamped on the engine block. I think on the front around he t-belt cover somewhere, but a quick search and you should find the proper location.I know for sure its stamped on the block. You should be aeb though, I dont think any others would fit properly.

Year of engine does not match the car. I was told it was a 2001 engine but I need to make sure.
