Default Engine Dies About 5% of the time...

I was wondering if anybody has had this problem. Sometimes when I get in my car and I startup the engine the cars cranks and the engine starts but then immediately dies. I then turn the key and start the engine again and same thing happens. Then maybe on the 3rd try it starts up and stays running. This only happens about once every other week or so, so it doesn't happen very often. I had the battery checked and it's fine. I'm just wondering if anyone of you knew what this could be.

Could be the engine coolant temp. sensor.. could be bad plugs, could be many things. Get ecu checked for codes.

i had the same issue, but like someone else mentioned, it could be due to a bunch of reasons
i can only tell you how I got mine to work by changing to 93 gas..got fuel cleaner/injector cleaner

i guess it must've been filthy in there....since these cleaners made the engine stop coughing/dying on me

I always put 93 octane in my car. I may try the fuel cleaner though.

I asked my local dealer about it and they thought it could be my car key. They said when the car starts up it sends out a signal to the car key and if the car key doesn't match the same signal the engine dies immediately. This is a security feature apparently. They suspect my car key battery is dead and it's not returning the cars radio signal so it cuts the engine. Does this sound right possibly? I didn't even know my car did this.

Could be... Seems stupid though.. If the key fits, that should be enough "security." Do you ever have problems unlocking from the remote? Do the valet keys have this "signal" feature built into them as well?
I think if that were true, we all would hear more about it.. Maybe thats for new/newer model A4's?? Either that or they are trying to confuse the **** out of you so you bring it in for them to manhandle your check book.

I remember something like this, Anti Theft on newer cars...

change the battery on the key.. could be it..

otherwise, you could have a fuel problem. When did you last change your fuel filter?

I've never had a problem with my keys not working with unlocking or locking the doors so I am real skeptical about their response. Also since it only happens rarely, if the battery was dying I would think it would happen more frequently as time goes on but it hasn't.

I'm going to stick with the fuel injector cleaner solution for now and see how that works. I've never had my fuel filter changed as I've only had the car since February. It is still under warranty so I may just take it in but I just hate losing my car for a day or two, even if they give me a loaner.

Would you rather have a bad fuel system? And drive around boosting and then you lean out and crap out your motor?

If you are under warranty just take it in.

Good point, keep on top of fuel related issues especially with a turbo charged engine.
