Engine Diesel Like Sound
Hi All,
I'm a new member to this forum. I purchased a 2005 A4 2.0T 78K about two weeks ago. After reading a lot of the posts in this forum, I've realized that the 'diesel like sound' that comes from my engine is a pretty comment issue with A4s. I took the car to a local mechanic that specializes in german vehicles and he gave the following list of parts to be replaced:
Tensioner
Rear Timing Chain
Valve Cover Gasket
Rear Cover Gasket
I just need some help making sure that I order the correct parts.
When he talks about 'Tensioner' does he mean:
'Timing Belt Tensioner' or 'Timing Chain Tensioner'? (Big difference in $$$ between these two parts)
When he talks about 'Rear Timing Chain' does he mean:
'Timing Chain' or 'Timing Belt? (not sure if the rear 'chain' in my vehicle is a chain or belt)
When he talks about 'Rear Cover Gasket' does he mean:
'Rear Main Seal', 'Timing Cover' or 'Timing Cover Seal'?
Thank you in advance for helping me with this matter.
Lastly, any recommendations as to where to purchase these items is much appreciated.

There is a timing chain between the two cams at the back on the engine that normally rattles. If the tensioner for that chain becomes too worn down you will get the rattle.
Are you looking to do this work yourself or just buying the parts to take back to that shop?

Thanks for the reply. You are correct, that's the chain the mechanic recommended to change. I was doing some research online and the tensioner(s) costs about $650, is that right? That seems a little expensive...
When I bought the car I received a 2 month/2000 mile powertrain warranty from the VW dealer I bought it from. I will be taking my car to the local Audi dealer this weekend to find out if my problem is consider a powertrain failure and see if the warranty I got will cover the repair.

Probably you got rid of the problem but I've had similar problem.
i used to get a clicking sound like diesels when the engine starts, then after couple mins when the engine, oil is warm it goes away.
So if this is what is to your car then your problem is: Compensators are clogged up.
Change your engine oils and within couple weeks your car should stop that clicking sound (it will clean up). If it won't stop, then your compensators are already broken and needs to be changed, though it's not serious if you will not change them, but that clicking sound seems to be annoying.
