engine oil questions
With the 1.8T's propensity for turning engine oil into coke, synthetic oil is mandatory. I use Mobil 1 0W-40, but there are several other good options which comply with VW spec. 502.00. Audi owner's manuals may differ, but the 2001 VW Passat manual calls for an oil and filter change every 5k mi / 8k km. However, the "fine print" notes that cars driven under "severe conditions" may require more frequent oil changes. Since my Passat sees mostly city and congested suburban driving, I keep it on a paranoid 3k mi / 5k km OCI (or 6 months, if that ever comes first).
I am currently using Castrol 10W-40 dino in the Audi 2.8, in preparation for a course of Auto-RX. After that, I am debating between continuing with dino on a 3k mi / 5k km OCI or switching to synthetic on a 5k mi / 8k km OCI, again reflecting mostly urban driving. The Dodge Stratus gets Pennzoil 5W-30 dino on a 3.5k mi / 6k km OCI, which is consistent with my son's driving style and the manufacturer's recommendations of 6k mi / 10k km "normal" and 3k mi / 5k km "severe." I see no compelling reason to put the Dodge on synthetic oil, and it may be the same story with the 12-valve Audi engine.

I heard it's bad to change from regular oil to synthetic. I just bought the car and I don't know what type of oil the previous owner used. Should I start using synthetic?
