I know the exact experience you're going through. What octane gas are you putting in your car? I just started going to a new gas station and putting in a different octane premium and the radical rpms and shaking went away.

If you plan to own the car for a while,
get a code reader or a VAG-COM.

You'll need a laptop - or a computer very close to the car
Verify you have a serial port on your laptop before you order one that connects via serial and not USB
ebay it a great place for a cheap ODB cable
download free software from ross-tech's website - allows you to check and clear codes if you want to do more buy a full ross-tech cable for $250

Or better yet, get the real thing from ross tech.

Sounds like a bad coil pack to me, but pull the codes.
