Engine RPM
I hope I am posting this in the correct area of this website. I am having a problem with my a4. its a 1999 2.8 Q. When I start the a4 first thing in the morning the RPM meter shows at around 1100.
I am not sure if this is normal? I have another vehicle ( a jeep grand cherokee ) and that never goes above 500-600 during idling.
After driving for some time the RPM comes down to about 900 to 1000 but I still feel the engine rev to me more than expected.
What should I do? I can take it to a mechanic but any suggestions for me that could allow me to do some changes myself will be much appreciated.
thanks

maybe it'll help- just for info-
my 01' 2.8 idles right around 600-700, (even on cold start)
i do know on most cars it does make a difference for auto or manual- manual is usualy a little lower but not as much as you are describing-

Hey I have the same problem.
When i first got my 98 A4 5 speed and started it up on a cold start it would be at 500-600 rpms. Now it is like 1300 which sucks.
Does your car make like a weird springy noise when it starts up cold??

Well, that isnt exactally a bad idle. when u start it in the mourning, it is cold, so the computer makes the car idle higher. with a choke and all. if it didnt, it would have trouble not stalling when it is cold. and 900-1000 after it drops is a little bit high, but i dont think it is a huge problem.
Should probably drop to 750-800 once warmed up, doesn't sound to far out of whack, but you may want to look for codes and maybe clean the TB out to start.
Post the codes on here if you find any.
