Default Excessive road noise

Got an Audi A4 1.8 (no turbo) and for some reason I get excessive road noise. The mechanic told me the sump pan covers had been removed. Would this be the cause, because the mechanic also said that the excessive road noise was coming from the tires. I have 16 inch wheels, do they cause more noise than 15s, etc? Also could it be the kind of tires that I have?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

So many possibilities here because you need to be more specific.

Does the noise start, increase, or change -

1. When accelerating?
2. When decelerating?
3. When traveling at highway speed only?
4. In all gears?
5. When braking?
6. When turning left or right at slow and/or high speeds?

Describe the origin of the noise specifically. What does it sound like to you?

The noise starts when I accelerate and stays the same volume when driving and decreases when I brake...
It is in all gears, I have an auto and sounds same when driving. When I drive the noise happens, and it sounds like road noise, I reckon it is cause the sump pan covers have been removed or maybe the tires are unevenly worn.

Could be a wheel bearing.
