A6 excessive cabin noise problem.

A6 excessive cabin noise problem.
This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but I have a bit of an issue with noise in my 2005 A6 2.4 petrol. I have performed a test with a decibel meter and confirmed that it the cabin noise is higher than a 2005 petrol VW Golf 1.6. I have managed to find references to tyre noise from searching around online, but nothing other than that and I am not convinced it is tyre noise. All the reviews I can find suggest that the A6 is a comparatively quiet car, and I dont think that mine lives up to this. I was wondering if anybody else could relate to this in any way.
Thanks in advance.

RE: A6 excessive cabin noise problem.
I've had this problem although not in my current 2005 A6. I'm sure you have already done this but this first thing to check is that you don't have a window that's not quite making it to the top when you close it. Secondly, check that all the window frames are making good contact with bodywork all the way round. On some cars it's surprisingly easily to very slightly bend them out of shape leaving a small gap, which sounds like the window's open. This is made worse if the gap is in a front window frame near the wing mirror. You only need a few mm and wind noise gets bad at high mph.
I found this at:

".....Road noise is nicely isolated, although probably not helped by our car's larger wheels and thinner rubber; we measured 71db at a steady 60mph...."
...and was wondering what db you recorded.
