First Car!!!!
I'm just reposting this so people can see what i asked
BadLuckAudi- The car is from my sister....its a 96 DX in mint condition she got from her boyfriends father..so it really dosnt need much work..she is just buying a new car and she thought since timing was good..she would offer me that car.
Now that i see what mj did, i might get a 2.8 and then upgrade in a few years because i would love having a nice interior vs a honda. I dont need the car to be too fast because im not that into racing...i just want a car that i can look at and say wow..this is mine..and no one else has it...thats why i was thinking audi, because no one around here my age has one. I was thinking along the line of conservative body mods, possibly skirts all around, or even a full kit, and some newer audi rims(if they would fit) A CAI and a 2" exhaust to give it a little low end sound and a few HPS.
About how much would a 96 2.8 go for?

Yeah, audis are expensive to maintain... and the really big difference between an audi and say, a honda... is that if you don't maintain an audi -- if you deviate from a perfect maintenance schedule for just one minute -- it will bite you in the ***, and bite hard.
Control arms are 500 bucks just for parts, timing belt is 300 just for parts... various parts are rather expensive. But yeah... I would recommend a japanese car as well... just less to worry about. Save your $$ and then move into a premium brand when you can really afford it. Stretching yourself too thin can get you into trouble.

Alot of people have said "maintained"..does that mean change the oil, rotate the tires, clean the underbody and engine compartment, or like take off the head and clean vaulves and change piston rings and stuff like that?
More like the timing belt and waterpump, suspension parts that wear and such, but yes oil and that stuff too, it can be spendy but if you take good care of it or the previous owner did the car should be a good strong runner
An older Audi may be a costly option. To get it running the way you want it, and then keeping it that way, will probably take some significant $$$.
A newer, lower miles, Japanese car may make more sense at your current stage of life? Toyota, Nissan etc.
Only you can make that decision.
I know cars are an emotional purchase though - hell I'm 30 and I still buy cars based soley on heart and nothing else

what ever you do go cheap first, now that i have an audi there is no way i can see myself in a jap car to save money... i know that sounds bad but thats how it is and im sure you will feel the same way, no one likes a downgrade
A jap car a downgrade? Maybe in a lot of ways it is compared to an audi... But, I feel 100% more confident as far as dependability goes whenever im driving our Maxima. Not that my audi hasnt been dependable, but I hear about all the things that can go wrong from pepole in here, then i go to a maxima forum, and the biggest problem people have there is boredum because nothing ever breaks to fix and there arent any real mods for it. From reading what some peoples experiences are in here i would have no reason to beleive audi's are reliable or are an upgrade from anything.... But... Then you see it in person, and drive it, and it makes you forget about "what if".. The Audi says "take me now".. "im fun"..."i look bad ***".... "i might be high maintnance, but i put out nicely and make it worth your while"... Ya know, that sort of thing...?
you know it took me less than a minute to decided to buy an audi.
