Yea thats true. Well I have a friend thats a Mechanic So I had him come along with me. Although, the guy had all previous work done on the car well documented.
What you could do is find out if theres any mechanics or audi shops near the location of the car and when you plan on going to get the car have them look at it.
Maybe say to the seller if something is not right(different from what he said) he pays the cost of your trip or something.
If the person is selling the car and need to do it asap it could work out.
For example theres a 99 1.8t QM with like 124K miles and some mods in Pennsylvania for 7500.
Its just an example but if you wait it out a lil while i'm pretty sure you can find a goood deal.

Just my luck I found this manual not too far away. This week a dealer should be calling me up soon too about one he said he was going to be getting in. Guess I get to drive the Sunfire a bit longer
( sunflower my g/f likes to call it )

yeah seems decent, just noticed that it wasnt quattro thanks for poitning that out too, damn car shopping seems impossible to find the perfect one but I can't wait to feel teh satisfaction when i do.
Just keep your eyes open. Deals hit you when you least expect them too. I bought my 97 a4 1.8tq manual for 5000 w/ an atp stg II turbo upgrade, remus catback, greddy turbo timer and brand new toyo proxes tires. It also just had the timing belt redone. It only has 69k on it.
as it gets closer to the end of the year, dealers will be willing to sell cars for less. i was able to buy mine for $7,000 just before new years last year.
and pay cash, that itself has bargaining power.

doesnt hurt to look
i bought a 2001 audi a4 1.8t avant quattro with 31800 miles on it
sports package, heated seats, mirrors, bose audio package, pretty much everything except xenon (which i put in myself actually) and moonroof which i'm going to put in in spring time
all for $14,450 through a dealer, car bluebooks at $18000 and some change

dont' know if you'd be willing to travel all the way to massachusetts, but there's a guy here just north of boston that owns a shop that specializes in audis. every car that comes through, they take care of it before they sell (timing belt, etc.). we went by his shop and spent some time talking to him. really nice guy, and he's all about selling his cars, as well as doing repairs, at prices that are well below the market. he even mentioned that he had a customer fly out from utah to purchase an audi because of the price. check out one of his listings:

if you're serious, i would recommend giving him a call and seeing what he has in stock.
also, as a recent purchaser of a 2000 A4 (for $8K), I noticed that there seem to be an abundance of them up here in the northeast. from what i can tell, this is due to the fact that more companies up this way lease audis as work vehicles for their employees (mine was a single owner who had it as a company lease vehicle and then bought it off the lease). so, that has the effect of dropping the prices on audi quattros considerably below what they might be elsewhere, like in illinois. of course, you'd have to travel to pick your new vehicle up, so it's up to you...

no prob. i should also mention that, while we didn't end up buying from him, we took a look at all his audis, and they were all *very* clean. if i hadn't come across such a good deal on ours, we would most likely have ended up purchasing from this guy.
