So I had just worked 16 hours dealing with screaming teenage girls and their obnoxious parents,it is 11pm on memorial day and I just want to go home and sleep. So I am driving through campus when I approach a three way intersection with a stop sign. I slow down long enough to see there are absolutely no headlights, bikers, or people so I don't stop all the way and coast through the turn. BAM, campus cop pulls me over for failing to completely stop at the sign. I try to play the sympathy card but she merely replies "So?" Writes me a citation.
Two questions: Should I try to fight it? (it is a 3 hour drive back to school/court site)
Was she an overzealous powertripping cop?
my venting is done. Thanks.

since you made an attempt to stop, but didn't follow through with it, that only means one of two things. either you blew it on purpose, or you were going way too fast to stop once you saw it. either way, i doubt much would be done if you fought it. on the other hand, if she doesn't show, you get to wash your hands of it. its worth it to try, but if she shows good luck.

You should fight it because it's doubtful she actually has proof you didn't stop. You could play the card that "She couldn't tell if I stopped or not because it was dark and she didn't fully see me" Either way, just make sure you do everything you legally can to give her a hard time. In a lot of states, campus police tickets don't go on your record, either. Same with a first ticket. But yeah. Fight it, if you're nice enough, the judge might throw it out even if everyone knows you rolled through.

You can always try and fight it, but the 3 hour drive back and forth maynot be worth it in the long run, seeing as how $$ gas is now adays how much is the ticket??
The ticket itself is 114 bucks but the fine is not what I'm worried about. I just don't want any points on my record/increasing my insurance. But I still have time to decide if I want to be guilty or not guilty. Thanks for all the feedback.

you can't just claim that she "didn't see" it happen in court. the cop is always right. the only thing you can do is go there and beg for it to be reduced, or pray she doesn't show. telling the cop that she is lying won't get you out of a ticket lol

To say she is power tripping based off her issuing you a traffic citationis abs statement, she is doing her job. She chose to enforce that particular sign that night and it just so happened to be one that you california rolled on. Excuses won't fly in court, that officer was there looking for exactly what you did. Me personally, I let a good deal people go on shitty stops at stop signs, when I pull someone over for running a sign it means they just plain didn't even slow down. Just remember that just because you don't see headlights doesn't mean somethings not still comin from that direction. Half the drunk people we pull over have no lights on. Typical police response yes, but true none the less.
