I have a 1998 A4 fwd with 90,000 miles. any speed over 30 mph. there is a low pitched roar coming from the front. I believe it is the drivers side. The cv boots were just replaced at the dealer. The tires have about 30k miles but are wearing perfectly even. The service guy at the local dealer said it was tire noise. It is much to loud even at low speeds for that I think. Also the local dealership misdiagnosed another noise on the rear that has since been fixed. Upon turning the steering wheel to the left the pitch changes and quiets again upon turning the wheel to center. Could it be wheel bearings ? Are they difficult to replace?

Could be either. If you rotate the tires and the noise moves to the rear, then it is tire noise. If the noise stays in the same wheel, then it is likely a bearing.

 

my bearing made more of a grinding noise like my tire was rubbing up against something.

edit: i guess you could describe it as a "low pitch roar" yep i bet its the bearing
