Default fuel consumption down with colder weather?

Hi everyone, your input would be greatly appreciated here.

i live in Toronto, Canada so i will be using litres and KM. sorry EH!. Currently own an 04 a4 1.8t q. since the spring. my average has been 600km on a full tank. in the recent weeks my average has been reduced to just over 500km, and i dont think i have been driving that much harder in recent days. this is my first turbo and awd and i know from common talk that turbos to perform differently with weather. Does colder weather affect the mileage that much? do other drivers have similar experiences? what are good trouble shooting techniques, things to watch for, or what people have done with this experience before?

sorry if this has been talked before, or if it is just a dumb question. but any help provided would be greatly appreciated.

thanks have a good day.

N.

cold weather does effect the mileage because you use the heater a lot so electrics are under load then there are the head lights and cooling fans, all work much harder in the winter ( the more the engine loading the more the cost of running ) its normal

Engines run richer and oil is thicker during cold starts.

Exactly, the oil takes longer ot heat up in the winter and while the oil is more viscous your mileage will suck.

I use 0/40 mobil synthetic, and have noticed my mileage drop too, it hasn't been above freezing here for a week now. No biggy though, I maybe 3 miles on my car per day during the week, and maybe a whopping 40 on the weekends, the only good thing about living in Billings, once you leave town there's nothing, so you never leave town!

ooohh those short drives are gonna pwn your car...particularly your exhaust. Moisture builds up on short drives and could corrode your muffle..but no biggy, just buy an aftermarket one that won't get eaten alive by salt and moisture!
