Default FUEL FILTER??

HELLO. I OWN A 1997 A4 QUATRO V6 12V AND LOVE DRIVING IT. , ANYWAY, LATLEY, MY CAR HAS BEEN LAGGING. (KINDA BUCKS OR STUDDERS), WHEN ACCELERATING. THE PROB. DOSE NOT OCCURE JUST AT HIGH RPM'S , MOSTLEY WHEN ACCELERATING. IT IS A SLOW CLIMB AT THE MOMENT. I THOUGHT IT MAY BE A FUEL FILTER, BUT WHEN I RESEARCHED IT, THE FILTER IS LOCATED IN THE GAS TANK AND SUPPOSITLY SHOULD BE GOOD FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR. DOSE THIS PROB SOUND LIKE IT COULD BE SOMETHING ELSE? AND WHAT IS UP W/ THE FUEL FILTERS ON THIS MODEL? ANY SUGGESTIONS COULD HELP!

THANK YOU,
G. LOWE

first of all, please lose the caps, it gives me a headache ....second, it could be a number of problems causing the studder...is your CEL on? could be a failing MAF, dirty injectors, dirty throttle body....the best thing to try is some fuel injection system cleaner (make sure it's 'fuel injection system' cleaner, not just a 'fuel injector' cleaner, sometimes they are two different things)...pour a bottle into your gas tank at the station just before filling up...if you want, you can make it more concentrated by only filling up half-way or 3/4, rather than the recommended full tank...if that doesn't work, let us know and we'll try to diagnose the problem

as bentframe said it could be a number of things. here is a list of a few thing that are not to hard to do

1. 1 gallon of toluene ( find in hardware store paint thiner section) in gas tank while at the gas station (also will need funnel)

2. change spark plugs ...rapid fire 9's i belive autozone caries them

3. cleen throttle body

4. cleen crank case and internals by using seafoam. half can in crank case and other half through vac line. for more instructions on seafoam just do a search

5. take you car to a local garage and chane the fuel filter. it is not to hard but a major pita. well worth it not to do it your self and should not cost that much

Have someone check for codes that haven't yet thrown a CEL. Could be a lot of things.

The fuel filter is not in the gas tank, but is located above the tank. The tank has to be dropped to access the filter.

Fuel Filter is only $15 at Autozone. I would replace it and see what happens.

Good Morning!

I too am having the same symptoms with my 2001 A4 2.8 V6 Quattro. It just started, and in addition to the sluggish effect when acelerating, I have the (CEL) lit up (solid). I also noted that I had changed my oil two weeks ago, and when I looked at my dip stick last night, it appeared that I was a 1/2 to a 3/4 qt low on oil. I don't want to take to "specialty shop" because they will take my arm, leg and the left side of my face just to pay for them to fix things that really don't need it yet. (what do I KNOW - really - I am NOT a car gal at the very least - but I do know that the car has ran perfectly up til this, and I don't think it needs a thousand dollar service call Monday am --- am I wrong)...???

it doesn't sound like a fuel filter problem to me more like arcing of the plug leads but changing the filter wont hurt anything its part of the service
