Fuel filter/pump - am i being ripped off?
So...I read from the forums that the B6's have a common problem with the fuel filter and makes a hissing noise. Well...I brought the car to the dealership and they are saying that I need to replace both the fuel filter and the fuel pump and wanted to charge me $660 for the parts and labor. Now, my question is that if there was something with the fuel pump, would it make any noises like everyone is experiencing or would it completely fail altogether? Do you think the dealership is just trying to rip me off by replacing both? If I replaced justthe fuel filter, will it fix the problem?
The noise started about a week ago and I have put quite a few miles on it, I travel for work so probably about 500 miles since than. I was wondering if all the mileage with the hissing/humming noise would have required to have my fuel pump replaced. Also, when I turn the car on, just lights/no engine, it makes the humming noise as well. Would that mean that it is, in fact, the fuel pump?

humming noise I would think is the pump, while the hissing is probably the filter.
You have to drop the gas tank slightly to change the filter, fuel pump is accessed by a hole in the spare wheel compartment of the trunk I believe.
600 doesn't sound too out of line, but you could do it yourself much cheaper.

If nothing else, change the filter first since it's inexpensive. You can always opt to do the pump at a later time. I like what CincyTT said about a Walbro for $100 though - if my pump goes, that's probably the route I'll take - why not get a high-capacity pump when it's that low a cost?
I think that the labor rate is a bit steep and they're probably going to just pump a stock pump and filter in the works.
