Default Fuel Gauge Problems

I have a 1996 Audi A4 2.8 FWD with about 130k miles when my fuel pump burned out. I had the fuel pump and fuel assembly replaced about one month ago. Well i'm still having problems and I don't want to take my car back to the guy down here in Auburn cause i'm pretty sure he's me taking for a ride. What happens is when I tighten the castle nut on the sending unit all the way the fuel gauge reads empty after i drive the car around for about five minutes and then dies, but if the castle nut is just loosened a little the car runs great except that i have to crank the key twice to get the engine started. Any suggestions?

John
