just did them. u DO NOT need a special tool of any kind. your mechanic is BSing u (typical scare tactic so he can land the job). Maybe he said HE uses a special tool, doesnt mean u need one. Mechanics have all kinds of "special tools".

As long as u have some workig knowledge of working on cars u will be ok. Just be cautious of how you disconnect things.

Basic procedure is: this is just general memory use a manual!

1 remove your gas cap to relieve pressure
2 remove plastic engine cover.
3 disconnect each fuel injector electrical plug (4)
4 remove 2 or 3? allen head socket bolts to fuel rail (attach rail to intake)
5 may have to move or disconnect accel cable to gain room
6 pull fuel rail with injectors straight out (will have ti use some force with a little jiggle)
7 you candisconnect fuel lines if u want to

will get a little gas messy-set up rags to catch any small residual fuel spills

each injector has two seals (top to rail and bottom to intake) the dealer sells them as a kit.

this job is not that bad at all

good luck

Probably want to disconnect the battery as well.

Is there a fuse on the a4 for the fuel pump? If so, you probably want to pull the FP relay/fuse, and turn the car over a few times to relieve the fuel pressure. I know you said remove gas cap, but is that enough?
IDK, I just have had to do this on other cars when working on injectors, not sure about the a4.
