Gas?
Can we run 89 octane in a 99 1.8tq? I don't get to drive it much these days (wife does) and with the gas prices up, she's been putting a bug in my ear about trading it in for something that will run on 87. So I'm tryng to compromise here..
Agreed! Don't put 89 in your baby! Also consider how much money you REALLY are spending at the pump. Here in wisconsin it is 10cents give or take a penny more for 91 octane over 87 octane. Now think how many gallons your put in per stop..roughly 15. 10 x 15 = $1.50. Fill up once a week prolly..so that's what 6bucks a month you'd save on gas...common..gimme a break..you prolly got that lyin around in your couch!

Tru listen to them....
over time your gonna kill your engine and it WILL "knock" on you....not worth the mere savings at the pump.....
I know its tough sometimes...I live in L.A. Ive paid upwards of 2.85 per gallon for 91 oct!!!!!
Its gotta be cheaper where you are....

Trust me fellas I found out the hard way once already over running 87 octane in my car.. It cost me 240 buxs, plus plugs.. So I'm not looking at doing that again.. I would prefered to spent that on something better like saving for a chip and DV..
Low octane gas will harm the combustion chamber of your vehicle, burn up your plugs, and ruin the cat and o2 sensors over time (a long time). The a4 (1.8t) needs high combustion temperatures, and with low octane fuel that temperature is not reached before combustion. This early/uncontrolled detonation is called "knock".
It will pit your combustion chamber. It will not completely burn off the fuel cleanly, leaving extra residue in your Cat, and will foul your O2 sensors.
But hey - if you want to save an avg of $80 bucks a year by using 89 octane, by all means...[8D]
Personally only put in 93 (94 if I can get to a Sunoco)
