Default gas : 87 ok ?

2008 A4 2.0T Quattro manual sedan.

Owner's manual says that performance and mileage may suffer if I don't use 91 octane.

But considering price of gas is about $3.50/gallon and only going up what do people think about using 87 ?

Thanks.

from everything i've read it's not the best idea especially over a long time. The naturally aspirated audis don't need the expensive stuff but the turbos do. If i'm wrong please correct me but I don't think I am. If someone could explain why that would be nice also.

You risk detenation and it will melt the pistons. Also your timing will be pulled and you will run slow as hell. So no, you cant run anything but 91+ octane

I heard the car will spit out anything under 91. Nah but I ONLY put in 93, I have a 07 B7 with 4k miles.

I was going to say the same thing. If you bought an Audi, you should be able to afford the gas.

Sorry to threadjack, but 93 is only highly suggested when the car is chipped, right?? The BP I usually fill up at has 93 anyway, but I've never let 91 turn me away from a station.

91 is the min suggestion. If you can find a gas station with 91..that's fine. Where I am it's either 89 or 93. I go with 93. Unless I have a loaner of course, then it's 89.
