Default gas mileage

Im not sure if my gas mileage is horrible but it sucks a lot of gas. the rpms while idling is under 1000 but still there is a lot of gas comming from my exhaust. What are some ways to get better gas mileage.. without killing to much of my performance? The problem could be that I am excellerating a lot but I think that it is too much. I fill my gas tank up a lot. let me know guys thanks.
I have a 96 2.8l v6 quattro.

Clean your air filter, make sure you are using the right gas, check your tire pressure, try not to "ride your brakes", use cruise control, etc etc. There are lots of ways to save on gas.

Are you sure its gas comming from your exhaust not water, all cars do the water thing its condensation.... or do you mean black smoke as in running rich??

Blue smoke is oil, black is gas (unless theres something i've missed all these years). How many miles ya got on it? btw, Its hard to tell the color if not a lot is coming out, might try starring at the oil from different angles if you have trouble.
