Is this good?
i am thinking that this is bad... turbo hissing like hell no acceleration, surging and black smoke puffs out the tailpipe under throttle?
vehicle is a 01 1.8t quattro with 78k on it. no check engine light. Does black smoke =bad turbo?

Black smoke could be either unburnt fuel or motor oil getting into the cylinder. Since your turbo is screaming it could be leaking oil and pushing it in the motor through the intake or something like that. Don't quote me on that one, these 1.8 guys will be more helpful...Another reason I'm glad I got a V6 lol
Umm...actually its burnt coolant that blows blueish white smoke plus the inmistakeable odor, fuel or oil burns black. But I'm not saying your wrong though I've seen stranger **** happen.
I will have to say that your totaly wrong on that. Oil=blue, water/coolant=white, and excess fuel=blackish. as for the prob with the car. sounds like the computer is giving the same gas that it would need with full boost, obviously without the boost,= way rich. would also kinda explain the hissing.
have a friend hit the gas in similar fasion to create the smoke, and get a smell of it. if it rich (thats my prediction) you will kinda smell the unburnt gas.

yea coolant is white, oil is blue, the ONLY think that makes black is too much fule, or maybe they put diesel in it
