Is this a good buy?
Hi, I'm absolutely new to Audis and I'm considering buying a 96 A4 2.8L V6 FWD with 91k miles:

The seller says the thermostat needs to be replaced (he got a $450 quote from the dealer), the AC needs to be recharged and the 90k miles service (including replacement of the timing belt) needs to be done. I offered him $4150 and he then asked for $4500. I'm planning to test drive the car tomorrow and take it to an auto shop, but I'd like to know if you guys think this is a fair price.
Thanks.

sounds like a nice price to me! little mods for the 2.8 motor however. $450 for a thermostat? I did my 3000GT, I think the part was $25. Easy cheesy. Def worth looking at.
ok before you buy that car... a couple things, the 12v 2.8 engine is known to be more reliable because it is simpler but it has 18hp less than the 30v 2.8. There are almost no mods out there for this car unless you go custom, so if you are thinking of modding it dont go for it. This car is really comfortable and quiet and it handles well, i love mine but sometimes wish i had a newer 2.8 or the 1.8 because i am too into speed. that is a good price, i got mine for 7 with 65k on it 8 months ago. they are still in book for like 9 if they are in excellent condition. It is a great car just dont think you can make it too fast... good luck on buying
Thats not a bad price, considering the work it needs.
Timing belt is going to run around 1k if you dont do it yourself. The thermostat can easily be replaced while this is being done, so that shouldn't cost you hardly anything, certainly not a $450 job.
Try and get him down closer to your price, since you will need to spend around 1200 on the car to get everything done. 1k for timing and thermostat, $200 for the A/C service?
Go up to 4200, but no higher. Then, wait, if he really wants to sell it, you have the upper hand because most people aren't willing to buy a vehicle that needs that much service done to it. Go there with 4200 cash, and I gaurantee he will sell it to you, because it needs a lot of work. If he does not, just tell him to call you when he's ready to come down on his price. I bet you'll be the new owner.
You may want to take it to a audi shop and have it looked over, toi ensure there are not other things in need of repair. Oftem tie-rod ends and control arms start to go at that mileage, maybe the brakes need work, etc.
Good luck.
