Default Good part upgrades for a4?

Hi, just signed up on this board for a friend. He has a 2000 audi a4 1.8t quattro. It's all stock but the lowering springs. Now he wants to know what kind of motor upgrades he can do to make it a little quicker. Btw, its an auto and i think they run 4-5 psi stock? I told him to just get a boost controller and up the boost to around 9 psi. Is there anything else besides that? Like bigger down pipe? I'm not too familiar with the 1.8t motors... so if you could please help me out. Thanks.

he can upgrade the ECU chip to give more boost. Do a search and you'll find some companies that sell upgrades.

Yeah get a chip - do not get a boost controller for an audi. Stock K03 is pushing 7-9 psi.

Yes, get a chip and no skip on the k&n filter. You will not see any real improvements running a k&n filter or a cai on a 1.8 engine. There has recently been some tests done on k&n filter setups and they favor the stock filter setup. If you want to know more, let me know. I'll be happy to give links.

i know this topic is probably beaten to death, but are chips going to significally decrease the life of your engine, specfically the turbo.

I recently had my turbo replaced around 34k miles under warranty.

brrman, the water pump was covered under my warranty, except for the $50 deducatable i had to pay.

the thermostat was 61.31

and charged me 47.50 for labor.

they always get you somehow

LOL

I would have argued about the labor cost knowing that if there replacing the water pump it only takes like an extra 5 minutes for a monkey to replace the thermostat...less the cost of bananas for the monkey...

Yes they can, but it all depends on the driver and what type of driving/abuse the turbos must endure. Most do not have problems, but, over time, anything could happen. Just be good to the turbos - let them cool down after hard runs. Keep the engine tuned properly/regularly. Always use synthetic oil like Mobil 1.
