Ijust getmy A4 (2.8 Quattro, 1999) yesterday and find the engine check light on.
People in Autozone checked the code for me. It shows code P0102, the mass air flow input is lower than expected for the current engine operating conditions.
Today I bought I air filter, and replaced it. Finally the engine check light is off.
Really amazing.

 

your filter was proably really dirty and was restricting airflow so it screwed with the MAF readings.

 

It's a Christmas miracle!!! j/k
