Default Grinding Noise When Stationary

Hi,

I've just found this forum when trying to find the source of my problem. I really hope someone can help, I'm supposed to drive to France in my car a week tomorrow...

I have a 1998 A4 1.8SE and it's done 110,000 miles. Recently it's developed a grinding noise that was there on and off. It's now happening more often and I've narrowed it down to coming from the front of the engine, more over to the left hand side (when looking from the front). This afternoon as soon as I started up the noise was evident and was still there after a 20 minute journey. The noise is there whether the car is moving or not and gets pretty loud at times.

I've had one mechanic look at it and he said it sounds like it's coming from the pullies at the front, but couldn't pin-point where. His advice was to book it into Audi and get their diagnosis. Trouble is they're booked up until next Friday...

Anyone got any ideas? Any help much apprecaited.

Klaus

could be worn bearings on the water pump/alternator/timing belt tensioner/ fan belt-serpentine belt tensioner/timing belt touching the cover, not really a good description grinding could be rubbing if you get my drift

Thanks for the quick reply, failing bearings certainly seems to fit the bill. Do you think I would do more damage by driving it, the mechanic who saw it said avoid driving it...

Is there anything I can do to try and narrow down the possibilites? I can't see anything rubbing, perhaps a video would help?

Thanks again,

Klaus

if the noise is getting louder then definitely don't drive it the damage will be more costly like if it was the water pump that's connected to the timing belt so if it went the damage would be horrendous to say the least
