Default Hard starting, spitting, sputtering and stumbling

Pops has a 2001 2.8.
When its cold it is hard to start and once it is started, it spits and sputters until it warms up...it will usually run fine for the rest of the day. The car has 55k on the clock.

Has anyone else had these issues? Does anyone have any suggestions on what to check or do? He has an appointment to have a tune up on Wed. The used car dealer wants $330 for a tune up (compared to $5xx.00 at the Audi dealer)...semi reasonable.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance

No offense to you, but just do it yourself. It's really not all that hard to replace plugs. I have a 1.8t, so I'm coil on plug. if yours is distributed, cap, rotor, and wires. shouldn't cost you more that $100 and an hour to figure it out for the first time. HAVE FUN!!

Yeah I may go home to help him out, I have done quite a few tune ups in my day. I just have to take a look. What are the tune up intervals on the 2.8? I really want to get to the route of the problem before i do a tune.

its just weird that it clears itself up after lettin her warm up.

The valves may have carbon on them that soaks up the fuel until its gets warm

Try a fuel injection service or pour on a bottle of treatment
