Hats off
LOL. I've been a member of various other forums, so I know how it is. But seriously though, those FAQ and newbie stickies have it all covered.
I'm looking at purchasing a Blue 1998 A4 1.8T Quattro with 105k miles. I came wondering about common problems, basic upgrades and the such.

If I end up getting the 98 A4 that I'm looking at, here is a list of mods. Please, anyone feel free to critique my list.
First off: check control arms, tie rod ends, and timing belt/tensioner.
Boost Gauge
Airbox Mod
GIAC Chip
Exhaust (unsure of which brand yet)
710N Diverter Valve
H&R Sport Springs
Shocks (undecided)
Sound System
Tinted Windows
ASA AR2 Wheels (18", undecided on tires)
Short Shifter
Weighted Shifter ****
Aftermarket Pedals
Silverstar Bulbs
Fog Lamps

Good list!
I'm not really into those pedal covers though....
add a boost guage, and you shouldn't run lowering springs without a new set of shocks (will work for a few months, but not "healthy")
with that setup for exhaust go custom 2.5" piping to a magnaflow contanister(inexpensive quality!)
whith wheels try for 17x8 to 18x8.5....the more rubber on the ground the better....
I have the same car...
I'd do boost guage first, then 710N, then GIAC, suspension...and after that pick your favorite from the list (most of the guys on here would say that you should make it perform, before you lavish it with "aesthetic extras"(ie: tint, fog lights, pedals, suond system(unless your speakers are blown))
good luck!

I agree totally on prioritizing the stuff that matters over the nick-nacks. I may be a noob to audi's, but I've owned high performance vehicles before, such as a 2002 Dodge Ram w/ cummins turbo diesel with 509hp and 1078ft/lb of torque, and a 592hp 512ft/lb dirt modified race car.
I think I want to go with 18" wheels just because they look kickass. I'm not sure on the exhaust, whatever I do... it's got to be classy, no rice phart can bullshit. I like the thought of the Milltek but the price is a bit up there. I'm competent with a welder, does the A4 1.8T exhaust have a lot of compound bends? Or could I buy some pipe and an assortment of individual mandrel bends then slice-n-dice and weld up a one-off exhaust? Would it be worth my time?
I'm working on an engineering degree so money isn't that easy to come by, but I think I can accomplish most of the list in short order. But I will be constantly looking for ways to substitute elbow grease for cash, a prime example being doing the airbox mod instead of buying a $300 intake.

On exhaust, I'd say buy the straight pipe (30$ max) you want, and have it bent by a muffler shop, sholdn't cost more than 50$ to match the stock bends and then get any canister you'd like (prices will definately vary) then weld it all together and vuala!
+1 on the 18"s
