Default headlight needs adjustment after lowered?

All,

I dropped my car for service today and also mentioned once in a while I am getting headlight auto-leveling warning sign. The dealer called me and said the reason caused the headlight auto-leveling warning is because my car is lowered which caused the headlight out of its range. The dealer will charge me $120 to re-adjust. I said the problem existed even before I lowered my car. Well... they refused to perform it under warranty.

Here is my question: Do I need headlight re-adjust? I thought the auto-leveling will adjust it for me. Also, I only dropped my car 1.5".

if the dealer sees that you are modded in any way and you have a problem (especially under warranty), they will try to relate the 2 so they wont fix it for free. I dont think lowering your car would cause a healight alignment problem. Thats about as much help I can be.

Adjusting headlights

Headlight (right)

Adjuster screws on right headlight:

1-
Height adjuster screw

2-
Height/ lateral adjuster screw

The arrangement of adjuster screws on the left-hand headlight is symmetrically opposite.

–
To adjust the height turn the adjuster screws -1- and -2- with the same number of turns.

–
To perform lateral adjustment only turn adjuster screw -2-.

Default RE: headlight needs adjustment after lowered?

Dave,

Thanks for the info. I just have few more questions:

1. Is the daigram works with headlight with HIDs?
2. Which way should I turn the screws to increase the height (clockwise or counter clockwise)? That means I want to make the lights higher.
3. How do I know if the light is too low or too high?

Thanks for your help.

I fed the information in and that's what came out ( for manual adjustment ) it didn't mention HIDs but it does have the data on how to set them via VAG but then you need the VAG cable and things

Headlights: checking settings and adjusting if necessary

The following checking and adjustment procedures apply to all countries. However, national legislation and guidelines for individual countries must be adhered to.

Requirements for checking and adjusting

t
Tyre pressures OK.

t
Lenses must not be damaged or dirty.

t
Reflectors and bulbs OK.

t
Vehicle correctly loaded.

Loading: With one person or 75 kg on the driver's seat and the vehicle otherwise unloaded (unladen weight).

The unladen weight is the weight of the vehicle ready for operation with full fuel tank (at least 90 %) including the weight of all equipment normally carried (e.g. spare wheel, tools, jack, fire extinguisher, etc.).

If the fuel tank is not at least 90% full put in additional weight as follows:

–
Read fuel level in fuel tank from the fuel gauge. Calculate additional weight according to the following table and place weight into boot.

Capacity table

Fuel level on fuel gauge
Additional weight in kg

1/4
52

1/2
35

3/4
17

full
0

Example:

When the fuel tank is half full, an additional weight of 35 kg must be placed in the luggage compartment.
Note

As an additional weight it is best to use a fuel canister filled with water (a 5 litre fuel canister filled with water weighs approx. 5 kg).

Roll vehicle several metres or depress front and rear springs fully several times so that springs settle correctly.

t
Vehicle and headlight adjuster must be on a level surface →Headlight adjuster operating instructions.

t
Vehicle and headlight adjuster must be aligned.

Ensure that the headlight adjuster is positioned 30 cm in front of the headlight.

t
Dip setting must be adjusted.

A “%” value is marked on top of headlight. This indicates the dip setting that the headlights must be adjusted to. The percentage value is for a range of 10 m. If the dip setting is 1.0%, for example, this converts to 10cm.

Vehicles with manually adjustable headlight range control:

t
The knurled wheel for headlight range control must be in position -0-.

Vehicles with automatic headlight range control
Note

Before checking/adjusting headlights always use the -VAS5051- to bring the headlights into their basic position.

t
Bringing headlights into basic position using -VAS5051-:

–
Connect -VAS5051- with ignition switched off.

–
Use K-lead adapter -VAS6017B-.

–
Switch on ignition.

–
Select “Guided fault-finding”

Enter vehicle data; all control units will then be interrogated.

–
Select the following options in the sequence indicated:

t
Go to

t
Function and component selection

t
Body

t
Electrical system

t
01 Systems supporting self-diagnosis

t
55-Dynamic headlight range control

t
J 431-Dynamic headlight range control, functions

t
J 431-Control unit for headlight range control, basic setting

t
Press the → button

Follow the test equipment procedure and confirm the entry until the following text is displayed:

J 431-Control unit for headlight range control, basic setting

t
Press the → button

t
Follow test procedure

Checking headlight setting (using new test screen without 15° setting line)

–
Switch on ignition and dipped headlights.

t
The horizontal light-dark border should coincide with the setting line -1- on the test surface.

t
The break-away point -2- between the horizontal section of the light-dark border on the left and the rising section on the right should coincide with the vertical line running through the central point -3-. The bright spot in the centre of the beam should be to the right of the vertical line.
Note

t
To make it easier to find break-away point -2-, cover and uncover left half of headlight (as seen in direction of travel) a few times. Then check dipped beam again.

t
If dipped beams have been adjusted correctly the centre point of the main beam should lie on central point -3-.

t
If using an old test screen with a 15 ° setting line, the adjustment procedure is the same as for the new test screen. To avoid incorrect settings, ignore the 15 ° setting line.

–
If the headlight setting is incorrect adjust the headlights as follows:

Adjusting headlights

Headlight (right)

Adjuster screws on right headlight:

1-
Height adjuster screw

2-
Height/ lateral adjuster screw

The arrangement of adjuster screws on the left-hand headlight is symmetrically opposite.

–
To adjust the height turn the adjuster screws -1- and -2- with the same number of turns.

–
To perform lateral adjustment only turn adjuster screw -2-.

Fog lights:

Dip setting:

t
Fog lights 20 cm

–
Check whether the upper light-dark border touches the setting line horizontally over the complete width of the test screen.

–
Pull air intake grille off inside of bumper -arrow-.

–
Turn the adjuster screw -arrow- to adjust the range. Lateral adjustment is not possible.
Note

The illustration shows the right foglight. On the left foglight, the adjuster screw is in a symmetrically opposite position.

Other additional lights:

Additional lights from other systems which have been retrofitted must be checked and adjusted according to the applicable guidelines.

Default RE: headlight needs adjustment after lowered?

Thanks Dave. OMG, I thought all I need is VAG com. What the hell is VAS-5051 and k-lead adapter VAS6017B? No wonder dealer needs to charge 1 hour of labor. Now, I am not sure if I should let dealer do it or leave the way it is?!
