HELP - Need a wiring diagram for the starter circuit
Need a wiring diagram for the starter circuit and ignition switch. I have an AWM engine code in a 2001 A4 sedan
Installed a new chip, went for a ride, car ran fine. Parked it, went to start it up 10 min later, and it would not crank. Everythign has power, 12V @ the battery.
ECU reads fine with a vag com, no codes.. I don't think its any immobilizer issues because the immo on my VW let me crank it and then it would just die. This wont crank at all. I think maybe a fuse is bad, or a bad ground. I removed and replaced the ecu a few times its sittign in there fine. I did find a 40A fuse in the cubby that houses the ECU that was blown. I changed it, but it made no difference. i have a haynes manual that absolutely sucks so i cant trace out the wiring. I have an AWM engine code in a 2001 A4 sedan
I have to load the car onto a trailer to go rally-x racing tomorrow. So i need to get this thign working.
im willing to hard wire a starter switch from the battery to the starter if I cant fint the problem with the oem wiring/switch.
Anyone know which wires on the ignition switch should send power to the starter?
Thanks for the help Im really in a bind with this thing.

OK, i fixed it, well kind of fixed it.
I jumped the starter trigger and the starter works, so i traced the wire back to the relay red wire with black stripe (no diagram, so this was fun). There is a single pin connector on the rear drivers side of the engine, and a beige multi pin connector in the ECU box that this runs red/blk stripe wire to the pass compartment.
Relay has 4 connections.
1. "constant power"
2. Output to Starter (red wire with black stripe)
3. Switched Power to relay coil
4. ground for relay coil.
The ignition switch was sending 12V to the relay, but when measured across the relay ground it was only 6 volts, which was not enough to actuate the relay. The relay works fine when tested with 12V.
So the "ground" for the relay is not 100% grounded. When checked to ground it has no continuity, so it is a switched ground. It is a small red and white wire. not sure if anyone can check the diagram for me and see where this goes. I jumped out the clutch pedal switch to make sure it's not bad, and jumping it had no effect.Stil no start, or voltage to the starter.
So anyways, i was going to hardwire a pushbutton switch, but then I noticed that the "constant power" to the relay that powers the starter is actually switched anyways, So I put a jumper from the "constant power" over to the output and it started right up without the relay. I can now start without pushing the clutch in though, so I think that the little red/white wire is somehow tied to this circuit.
So if anyone needs to hotwire the starter on a 2001 A4 all you need to do is send power to terminal 87 on the top right relay in the relay panel under the kick panel. Relay is a type #53.
I saw this no start problem in a dozen or so places on hereand figured i woudl share a fix, or at least a way to get on the road again.
the wire your taking about should go to the ignition switch because that's where it will be for the switched live to kick the starter motor over, the problem could be a bad connection / relay gone bad picture added / ignition switch bad,

edit: you could fit a press button switch in the wiring which only stays live when pressed so when released it wont burn your stater motor out

I found the switched power at the ignition switch, but does this switched ground red/white wire also trace back to the ignition?
The car is working fine with my jumper installed, and as a backup plan I have a momentary switch wired up to feed straight power to the starter connection on the relay, i can connect that in a minute shoudl my current setup stop working. Your diagram doesn't realy show anything. Most of those are empty slots on my car.
The relay im talking abotu is the top right one that is present.

While its very convenient, and you are smart for figuring it out, I dont know how I feel about someone describing in great detail how to hotwire our cars.
If I was a car theif and wanted to know how to hotwire a car, the first place id go is a car forums site and search on "hot wire."
Then again the imobilizer would have to be deactivated to do this, so I dunno....?
